Baloch Struggle for Freedom and Pakistani state barbarism

Balochistan is part of the Central Asian Plateau. The Baloch land shares its border with Persia in West, Afghanistan in North and Sindh and Punjab in East. Because of its strategically important location and vast reserves of natural resources Balochistan has been the focus of world powers throughout history. The first unified Baloch nation state was established in year 1666 under the authority of Khanate of Kalat.

The British Empire army invaded Balochistan on 13 November 1839 and killed Mir Mehrab Khan the then ruler of Balochistan. A few decades after the invasion, they divided Balochistan into three parts. That is why today Balochistan divided between three countries i.e. Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.

There are only guesstimates of the Baloch population - about 12 million Baloch people live in Pakistan occupied Balochistan, over 4 million in Western Balochistan (Iranian occupied Balochistan) and over a million in Northern Balochistan, currently controlled by Afghanistan.

The British using its infamous policy of divide and rule drew two arbitrary lines, which have divided Balochistan into three parts: The ‘Goldsmith Line’ (1871) that presently separates Iranian occupied Balochistan from Pakistani occupied Balochistan. This agreement was between the Persian rulers, the then Qajar King Nasir-ul-Din Shah (1848-1896) and the British. In 1893 another arbitrary line the ‘Durand Line’ was drawn – transferring a large segment of the Northern region of Balochistan to Afghanistan. These borders were drawn without the consent of the Baloch people and to this day Baloch have never accepted these artificial lines (FPC, 2006).

By the beginning of the First World War the Persian lost control over Western Balochistan. In 1916 Bahram Khan Baloch was recognised by the British as the effective ruler of western Balochistan. Bahram Khan was succeeded by his nephew Mir Dost Mohamed Khan in 1921. His time in power coincided with the reign of Reza Khan as the ruler of Persia. Reza Khan invaded Western Balochistan and illegally annexed it to Persia in 1928.

Why “Daily Tawar” is singled out For Persecution?

Daily Tawar Editorial - Translated By Archen Baloch

The difficulties that the Daily Tawar faced right from the beginning are still persisting but now their intensity has increased to extreme. It was only Journalists who reported and presented the real picture of the society and the death and destruction of the world’s horrific big wars. In its journalistic responsibilities, Daily Tawar has always strived to adhere to the principles of real journalism in the war of justice and unfairness.

Despite facing the state sponsored conspiracies and bitter hostilities and having lost some of its exceptional team members, Javid Naseer Rind, Razzaq Gul, Lala Hameed, Ali Sher Kurd, Rahmtulla Shaheen and others, Daily Twar has never wavered in its ten years journey of presenting the truth.

Within the parameters of real journalism, Daily Tawar not only refused to become a commercial enterprise, but also it assumed the responsibility of interpreting Baloch aspiration and worked hard to expose the real face of God gifted State of (Pakistan) and its conspiracies against Baloch identity and Balochistan’s integrity.

The established role of opposition in political system world over is to effectively check the corruption and wrong doings of the state machinery. The same role of opposition is also established in Pakistani parliamentary system. It not only opposes government’s wrong decisions and misdeeds but also it helps the rulers to see the right way. This was what Daily Tawar did right from the beginning which is supposed to be the role of an opposition party in the political system of a democratic state.

If you go through the archives of its ten years issues, you will not be able to find that it has ever indulged in any activity against the state. Rather, you will find that it has played the role of opposition depicting the real face of the state. Nowhere in the world is opposition regarded as a state enemy. But unfortunately, the state has designated daily “Tawar” as a state enemy, which is nothing more than hypocrisy.

Daily Tawar kept changing its office in different places because of the heinous criminal threats of abduction and kill its staff members, the reporters, subeditors and proof readers received from different state security agencies.

Little do political parties in Balochistan realise that the noose of disaster, devastation and desolation will tighten around the neck of the people

Ironically, an irony that escaped him, Sardar Akhtar Mengal’s decision to participate in the forthcoming elections coincided with March 27, the day Baloch nationalists observe as a ‘Black Day’, because that day in 1948, Balochistan was forcibly annexed, depriving the Baloch of their freedom. Interestingly, on March 25 on arrival he had said that nothing had changed since his last September Supreme Court (SC) appearance. He said since then 70 bodies had been dumped and 60 target killings had taken place. He said institutions were mistakenly trying to impose their views by force and had pushed Balochistan to the present critical situation. He added he would not have lived four years in exile had there been constitutional rule in the country and was of the view that free, fair and transparent elections could not be held without ending interference by the intelligence agencies, and moreover, the caretaker government was unlikely to succeed in restoring law and order in two months, where previous rulers had failed. He emphatically added it was not clear how the elections would be held in a ‘bloodstained’ Balochistan.

Apparently, somehow the situation suddenly changed and Mengal joined the bandwagon though the ground reality was that a few more bodies were dumped in Karachi and Hub after his arrival. This kidnapping and killing will not end during the caretaker period or after the elections because not a single person has been held accountable. A March 21 news report stated that the SC’s three-member bench was told by DIG CID Balochistan Feroze Shah that 10 army officers are involved in the abduction of missing persons in Balochistan. He stated, “Following the statements of 12 missing persons after they returned home the Balochistan police asked the Frontier Corps (FC) to trace the whereabouts of the accused army men including two Lt Colonels, six majors and two subedaars.” He disclosed that the FC said some of these officers did not belong to it, and others had gone back to the army. So there the matter rests; people continue to go missing without accountability.

27 March, Balochistan Occupation Day: A Baloch mother’s appeal to the Chinese people

My dear Chinese Mothers!
I am writing to you with deep grief and heartache to convey the message of Baloch mothers, a mother’s absorbent heart can understand much by saying less from a mother’s aching heart. Our fourteen thousand loved ones including our daughters are abducted by Pakistan and Iran, we have received one thousand mutilated bodies of our gems like sons in last two years and this is a continuous daily base routine, their beloved bodies had uncountable wounds of severe torture, our women and children are facing deaths due to bombardment on our civil populations, burning alive in their homes, poisoning of water resources, state control on mobility and supplies of food and medicines. We understand this is painful for you but may be shocking to know that all this is baked and backed by China.

We have a high respect for the people of China and we still have expectations from you who once took the lead of revolutionary nations of the world in the great leadership of Chairman Mao Zedong. China became one of those great countries who showed respect for peace, equal rights and freedom of all nations. But your government’s role has proved completely opposite with the passage of time. As you may know that our country Balochistan is the mother of human civilizations “Mehrgarh” eleven thousand years ago, Baloch Kurd mothers created this matrilineal civilization of peace and equity where the first wheel, geometry, chemistry, calendar, writing and many other important inventions and creations took place but no weapons because mother’s society had high value for creativity but there was no place for destruction tool, that is a legacy of all women as a women’s creation.

In 19th century our country was occupied and divided into three parts by British colonial power and Included it in Iran, Afghanistan and the last free part was occupied by the artificial neo colonial state of Pakistan in 1948.We the Baloch nation is in struggle of freedom and unification of our motherland for last one hundred years, we deserved the support of all peoples and nations of the world who believe in right of freedom as a fundamental human right, but it never happened. The first shaking of our trust in the “revolutionary” China was in 1958 when Chinese doctors were seen monitoring and guiding the process of torture of Baloch freedom leaders in a secret Pakistani prison; the notorious ‘Kuli camp’ in Shall (Quetta) Balochistan, it was not a coincidence that at the same time detailed survey work started for Saindak gold mine in Balochistan.

Afghan Crisis and the Unclear American Policy towards Pakistan

By Hafeez Hasanabadi - Translated by Archen Baloch
Afghans are highly weary of 34 years’ external and internal wars and their immediate neighbors, Baloch and Pashtun are also in a constant state of virtual hysterical condition.

Internationally, big powers America, Russia, India and China are also unhappy with the current situation. But no solution is in sight of the problem in the near future. Rather, there is every possibility that it can get more complicated in future.

Keeping in view the possible challenges, the Afghan government issued a statement in which it raised the concerns over Taliban release. “Last year Pakistan released 26 senior Taliban leaders and they all rejoined the Taliban again”. Similarly Afghan President Karzi, in a letter of condolence to Pashtun leader Asfand Yar Wali on the killings his party leaders, asked for a joint deliberation on Afghanistan issue.

Here we’re to deal with two important questions to see (1) to what extent the Pashtun leaders of Pakistan are influential to control the Taliban and (2) what would happen to President Karzai’s appeal?

It is a bitter reality that Pashtun leaders of Pakistan and Pashtun general public are pool apart in their thinking about Afghan people when it comes to Afghanistan issue: Pashtun leaders’ thinking reflects Pakistani rulers’ point of views whereas a common Pashtun regards Afghans as sincere as of a brother.

This was the contradiction that four months back, this scribe in an article on Afghanistan issues, “The Afghan Crisis, A matter of Concern for America and Russia” said that “All that efforts that America is exerting through Afghanistan government for talk with Taliban and getting their fugitives released from Pakistani jails are seemed to result into a zero sum game as it is the game that Pakistan exactly wants to be played for dissipating American and Afghani energy and time”.

The statement issued by Afghan rulers today reflects exactly the same concerns we predicted a few months back. With American money and Afghan rulers’ recommendations, Pakistan has created the hell of difficulties for them. The main reason why we termed the release of Taliban prisoners as a zero sum game was that we all alone knew that either our Afghan friends are forced or in a hurry to understand the disposition of Pakistani rulers which caused them to overlook some very important facts.
