Sindhi and Baloch activists in have held a protest demonstration in front of Chinese Embassy in London against China’s collaboration with Pakistan. The World Sindhi Congress had given the call for protest.
The protest was against the Zulfiqarabad, a modern city spread over a million acres being planned in the memory of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, in Thatta district of Sindh, which the Sindhi nationalists believe is nothing but a conspiracy to turn them into a minority by colonising their home land by non-Sindhis. They are of the opinion that the Chinese in collusion with the provincial and federal government Pakistan are the main instruments of this colonisation.
The leaders of World Sindhi Congress said that the project will result in displacement of thousands of indigenous Sindhi people from coastal villages, signs of which are visible already. They said there is also a serious concern that Sindhis will soon become minority in their own province, as thousands of migrants flock to ‘dream city’ of zulfiqarabad. Already, Sindhi speaking population is only 60% in the province, and the minority in urban areas composing just 25%. A demographic and linguistic shift in the composition of the province will be the death knell for hopes of Sindhi people’s rights.
They said indigenous Sindhi population having been neglected since creation of Pakistan is unlikely to possess the Capital and skilled human resources and thus will not benefit from this new city. Explaining the international strategic of project the Sindhi leaders said that China and US both are keen to have influence over the strategic corridor from the Strait of Hormuz to Strait of Malaca. It is perceived that Gawadar became a casualty of this cold war in Arabian Sea and India Sea, and that a Baluchistan like situation may result due to Chinese adventure of Zulfiqarabad. Ultimately, the price will be borne by the Sindhis.
Sindhi speakers said that they were not against development but if anyone wanted to help the people of Sindh they should invest in Education and health section as victims of flood in Sindh are still living in appalling conditions.
The International Voice for Baloch Missing Persons and BSO-Azad members were also present at the protest. Addressing the protest Faiz Baluch a member of IVBMP has strongly condemned China’s collusion with Pakistan at a time when Pakistan is carrying out Baloch genocide. He said Balochistan at present is an occupied territory and China has no right to invest and carry out work on Baloch soil without the consent of Baloch people. He further said that China’s collaboration with Pakistan at time when Pakistan is committing gross human rights violation in occupied Balochistan is tantamount to supporting Baloch genocide.
He appealed the government and people of China to stop being crime partner of Pakistan – as Pakistan is killing innocent Baloch activists. He further said, “The Baloch have resisted against all foreign occupiers including the Protégées, Mongols, British imperialists, Pakistani and Persian invaders – if need be they will also resist against China’s loot and plunder of their resources in Balochistan.”
He said China and all other countries will be welcomed with open arms to develop and invest in Balochistan after the independence but at this stage Baloch are struggling to regain their freedom, the International Multinational Companies should refrain from become a partners of Pakistan against Baloch people.
He said Pakistan and Iran have disappeared and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Baloch men, women and children since they illegally occupied Baloch land and their atrocities against Baloch continue to this day. Hence the international community including China is requested to stop helping Pakistan and Iran.
