London :

The Baloch Diaspora in United Kingdom has paid rich tributes to legendary leader Nawab Akbar Bugti who was killed in a military action in the mountains of Kahan, Balochistan on August 26, 2006.

Baloch Republican Party (BRP) organised a seminar on the occasion of sixth anniversary of Nawab Bugti at the University College, London which was attended by Baloch activists from across the United Kingdom.

The speakers paid rich tributes to Nawab Bugti and emphasised the need of unity among Baloch parties to gain sovereignty as espoused by Nawab Bugti in his life. They said Nawab Bugti sacrificed his life for independence of Balochistan and it was due to his sacrifice that Baloch youth took inspiration from and continuing the struggle for liberation.

The speakers said that it became clear before his killing that he only wanted to fight for the rights of Balochistan and didn’t want to compromise with the military junta. They said Nawab Bugti had advised Brahumdagh Bugti, his grandson who lives in Switzerland on political asylum, and Balach Marri, Nawab Khair Beksh Marri’s son, who was killed in a missile attack, to continue the struggle for liberation till victory.

Brahumdagh Bugti also addressed the gathering via telephone and thanked the participants of the meeting for attending the Nawab Bugti Memorial Day. He said the best way to pay tributes to Nawab Bugti was to complete his mission at all costs and not be distracted. He said Nawab Bugti wanted to unite the Baloch parties and now it was the responsibility of all the Baloch people to fulfill his dream of unity of the Baloch political factions. He said division amongst Baloch parties was the biggest handicap and all the parties must unite for the ideology given by Nawab Bugti.

Nobat Marri, a Press secretary of BSO-Azad London zone and Baloch human rights activist has emphasised on the need of a road map which would lead the Baloch towards the right direction and unite the struggle for freedom. He said “Today the Baloch struggle for National liberation struggle is at an important juncture and it demands from us honesty, commitment and unity. We must unite for nothing less than for the freedom of Balochistan – a unity to project oneself through deception and lies is not longstanding and neither is it in the benefit of Baloch nation. The Baloch pro-independence parties have to have a contract with Baloch Nation in shape of a clear road map to tell them what they are struggling for and what they will gain if they follow the given road map.”

Marri further said we, the Baloch, need to tell the International Community and Sympathisers of Baloch struggle about our future plan and the kind of Balochistan that we want. We need to assure them that our free Balochistan will be different than fanatic states like Iran and Pakistan. We have to assure the world that we will not become a burn on the International Community rather we will contribute to world economy and prosperity as a proud member of this global village.

Nobat Marri said the Baloch leadership was obliged to answer the questions of Baloch masses about their future vision of free Balochistan. “Will it be a free, democratic and peaceful Balochistan or will it be controlled by Sardars and they might treat us even worse than Pakistan?” he said Baloch (We) must demand an assurance and a pledge from Baloch leadership that after freedom every Baloch men, women, despite having their different religious beliefs will be treated equally and will have equal opportunities as a citizens of free Balochistan.

Baloch intellectual Dr Naseer Dashti called Nawab Bugti “one of the greatest heroes of Baloch national struggle” as he abandoned the life of comfort and showed love for his people and for the ‘cherished’ Baloch values.

“The Baloch political activists must not only analyse the weaknesses and strengths but it is also imperative to identify those among the Baloch ranks and files who are betraying their nation by raising hypocritical slogans, breeding seeds of cowardliness and submission,” Dr Naseer said.

Sohaib Mengal, the international representative of BSO-Azad and a central comittie member after paying rich tributes of Shaheed Nawab Akbar Bugti said that today the enemy says that Nawab Bugti died for royalty or other petty problems and unfortunately this claim is falsely corroborated by few of our misguided Baloch too. I want to tell them that it was long before any problems had arisen in Dera Bugti when Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti organized a meeting and convention of Baloch leaders in Dera Bugti. Long before anything happened Nawab Akbar Khan along with Shaheed Balaach Marri solved the years’ long dispute between Marri and Bugti and proved their rationality and open mindedness. Both the leaders knew that the emancipation lies in getting rid of enemy and not in broadening the tribal feuds.

Mr Mengal said it was high time that Baloch must follow the footsteps of Dad-e-Baloch, Balaach Marri and the martyrs of struggle. “It is better to struggle against the tyranny than to waste our energy on petty issues. It is not the time to entrench ourselves in you and me. We have to become us now. We have to become a nation.”

He said thousands Baloch who are languishing in the torture cells of enemy did not sacrifice for anything less than independence. From 12 years old Shaheed Waheed Balaach to the 79 years old Shaheed Akbar Khan everyone sacrificed for a free Balochistan and a united struggle.

The BSO international representative further said “We have to adopt activism for Balochistan in a more serious and organized way. We have to reprioritize our tasks and preferences. It is that time in our struggle when we have to rank the activism at the top of our priorities. All those who are being killed in cold-blooded murders or all those who are facing brutal torture are sacrificing not for personal gains but for the Baloch nation. They are sacrificing for us. Now we should also downplay our personal interests and become part of the struggle considering it an obligation on us and not a recreational activity.”

Abdullah Baloch, a leader of Balochistan National Movement (Baloch Raaji Zrombesh), has said that the independence of Balochistan was a must for every Baloch. “The independence of Balochistan is in full conformity with the international law, since there is no prohibition for seeking independence under international law.”

He further said Hayrbiar Marri’s recent plea for international intervention must be followed and continued.

Abdullah Baloch said the Baloch must welcome support and even intervention from every corner. Pakistan need not be reminded that when its criminal Army committed genocide and horrific atrocities on over a million of Muslim Bengalis in Bangladesh in 1971; it was India that intervened and saved Bengali Muslims from Pakistani onslaughts and helped them achieve their independence. For the Baloch movement, India and America are those regional and international powers with shared common interests.

He said the martyrdom of Nawab Bugti, the martyrdoms of Nouroz Khan, Balaach Marri, Gulam Mohd Baloch, Dr Khalid Baloch, Prof Saba Dastyari, Rahim Zardkohi, Shirmohammad Arbaabi, Yakob Mehrnehad and for this matter every Baloch Shaheed who devoted and sacrificed their lives, best remembered by demanding an end to illegal occupation of Balochistan and committing ourselves to and for freedom and independence of Balochistan.

He also appreciated the statement of Khan Soleiman Daoud in which he had said in clear term said that “we shall make Balochistan independent, no matter whether one is happy or resented.” Such statements are vital to the Baloch movement, and must be echoed by other leaders, Abdullah Baloch said.

Mansoor Baloch, BRP’s UK leader who organised the event, said Balochistan was pushed into a frightening crisis with the killing of Nawab Bugti and “the short-sighted leadership in Islamabad and Rawalpindi thought that Baloch would be subdued with Nawab Bugti’s killing but time had proved how false their vision was and how they remained hypocritical and bankrupt”.

He drew attention towards the military operation particularly in Bugti and Marri areas and said that the houses of ordinary people had been turned into gulags where Baloch youth were being persecuted. He said that the level of resentment was running high in all layers of the society but the ruthless policies of the state would fail.

Samad Baloch alleged that since the start of the military operation more than 10,000 people had been killed and Pakistani government was not allowing independent observes in the area for fear of exposure.

Baloch student Qambar Baloch and Raheem Bandoi also addressed the gathering.
