Leadership Faces Prolonged Legal Delays and Rights Violations: BYC

SHAAL (QUETTA):  The Baloch Yakjhati Committee (BYC) has raised serious concerns over what it calls a “systematic and deliberate” delay in legal proceedings against its detained leadership, now entering their sixth month of incarceration without trial.

In a press statement released on Friday, BYC said that its central organiser, Dr. Mahrang Baloch, along with central leaders Beebagar Baloch, SibgatUllah Shah Ji,  activists Beebow Baloch and Gulzadi Baloch, are being unlawfully detained and denied their right to due process.

The BYC leadership was initially held on physical remand and later transferred to Hudda Jail, Quetta, under judicial remand. However, legal proceedings have stalled due to repeated failures by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) to submit a formal complaint report.

“Even fifteen days after the last court hearing, the CTD has failed to file the required report,” said the committee. “The court’s continued extensions point to an alarming pattern of collusion between the judiciary and state institutions aimed at indefinitely prolonging the detention of our leadership.”

The BYC also condemned a recent decision to hold the upcoming court hearing inside the jail rather than in open court, citing so-called “security concerns.” The group argues that this move violates both domestic legal standards and international human rights laws, undermining transparency and accountability in the legal process.

In a particularly distressing development, the committee highlighted the deteriorating health condition of disabled activist Beebagar Baloch, who has reportedly been denied urgent medical treatment.

Beebagar, who has undergone two previous surgeries, is now suffering from a severe urinary stricture blockage that requires immediate surgical intervention. The jail authorities’ inaction, BYC says, constitutes a “grave violation of humanitarian standards and the rights of prisoners.”

Human rights observers have long criticised Pakistan’s handling of political detainees, especially in Balochistan, where enforced disappearances and prolonged detentions without trial are frequently reported. BYC’s latest statement has intensified calls for international scrutiny.

“We urge the United Nations, global human rights organisations, and civil society actors to take immediate action,” the statement read. “The Government of Pakistan must be held accountable for violating its international obligations concerning fair trials, medical care, and legal remedies.”
