Balochistan: Iranian Border Guard Killed in Clashes with Baloch Gunmen
London – Asharq Al-Awsat: A member of the Iranian the border guard was killed Thursday during clashes with Baloch gunmen in the southeast region that borders Pakistan.

A border guard official in the Sistan and Balochistan province said that a member of the guard forces was killed during armed clashes with the gunmen as he was monitoring the region in the town of Lar, reported the German news agency.

Lar lies east of Zahedan city and near the Pakistan border. The Sistan and Balochistan province is adjacent to the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The province has been witnessing several security incidents, including the assassination of a Sunni cleric and the death of a border guard officer and three members from the Iranian security forces in separate clashes with gunmen.

The Baloch Jaish al-Adl group, which opposes Iranian presence in Balochistan, claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack in a statement on its website.

The group had last month released a statement about the fate of an Iranian soldier who was held captive by its gunmen in wake of clashes that left dozens of Iranian border guards dead and wounded.

The group regularly attacks the border guards and Iran had threatened in the summer of 2017 to retaliate by striking Pakistan.
