BSAC Condemns Appointment of Scandal-Involved Individual as Vice Chancellor of Lasbela University
QUETTA: The Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC) has strongly condemned the appointment of Malik Tareen, who was previously implicated in the University of Balochistan scandal, as Vice Chancellor of Lasbela University. The BSAC decried the decision as a “travesty of justice,” calling it a direct attack on the educational system in Balochistan.
Malik Tareen, who had been involved in a major scandal at the University of Balochistan, was first appointed as Vice Chancellor of Makran University. His recent appointment to Lasbela University has raised serious concerns about the state of education in the region. The BSAC criticized the appointment of an individual who, according to their statement, has undermined Baloch and Pashtun cultures and traditions, and has been complicit in unethical practices.
“The primary role of university heads is to nurture students in an intellectual and creative environment,” the BSAC spokesperson said. “However, under Tareen’s leadership, Lasbela University has seen a decline in its academic atmosphere. One of the students was subjected to enforced disappearance, and faculty and students have been intimidated and threatened.”
The BSAC also pointed out the broader implications of the decision, linking it to a systematic and deliberate anti-education agenda being pursued in Balochistan. The spokesperson highlighted recent incidents such as police crackdowns on the hostels of Bolan Medical College and the University of Balochistan, which were closed under dubious pretences.
“These actions are part of a larger effort to obstruct Baloch youth from accessing education and to stifle their intellectual development,” the statement continued. “The appointment of Malik Tareen is in line with these harmful tactics and has turned Lasbela University into a military-like environment, rather than a place for academic growth.”
The BSAC warned that these actions are not only damaging the academic careers of Baloch students but also threatening the intellectual progress of the entire region. The committee called on all Baloch youth to stand united in defending their educational rights and to challenge these anti-education policies.
In closing, the BSAC made it clear that it would take strong action if the administration of Lasbela University did not cease its damaging behaviour. “We urge the government and authorities to recognise that Lasbela University, like all educational institutions in Balochistan, is our national asset. The Vice Chancellor and staff are employed to foster an academic environment, not destroy it. If this continues, we are ready to take decisive steps to protect our educational institutions,” the BSAC concluded.
