Balochistan: Terrorism Charges Registered Against Baloch Journalist for Posting Mahrang’s Video
SHAAL, BALOCHISTAN: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Pakistani police has registered a terrorism case against a young journalist, Niaz Baloch, for uploading on social media a speech by Dr. Mahrang Baloch that authorities have termed “anti-state.”
Speaking about the case, Niaz Baloch said he is a student and comes from a modest background, with his father working as a bus driver while his siblings are pursuing their education in colleges and universities.
He said that both he and his family have been facing sustained state repression over the past two years due to his journalistic work highlighting issues affecting the Baloch people. He maintained that his writing has not targeted state institutions or officials, yet he continues to face legal action.
Baloch further said that he secured bail after a significant effort and has been contesting the charges in court. His case was initially heard at the Sessions Court in Mastung, where it was argued by Advocates Chief Ataullah and Najeeb Shahwani during multiple hearings. He added that the case has now been transferred to the Sessions Court in Quetta.
Describing the case as beyond his financial capacity, Baloch appealed to the legal fraternity in Balochistan for support. He urged lawyers to assist him in defending the case, saying he cannot afford to pursue such a serious matter alone.
“I am a student, and my financial situation is not strong enough for me to fight such a large and serious case on my own. Therefore, I humbly appeal to the legal community of Balochistan to support me during this difficult time and help me in fighting this case.”
